Dr. David Koppenhaver

David Koppenhaver, Professor, has been a faculty member in the Department of Reading Education and Special Education (RESE) since 2004. He holds a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) and NC teaching certification in Reading K-12, Middle Grades Language Arts (Grades 6-9), Intermediate (Grades 4-6), and Elementary Education (Grades K-6). His research focuses on literacy in children with significant disabilities including autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disabilities, complex communication needs, and multiple disabilities. In 1998 he co-founded the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies at UNC and in 2002 was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Queensland in Australia. His most recent publications include Comprehensive Literacy for All: Teaching Students with Significant Disabilities to Read and Write (Paul H. Brookes Publishing), coauthored in 2020 with Karen A. Erickson, and Social and Dialogic Thinking and Learning in Special Education: Radical Insights from a Post-Critical Ethnography in a Special School (Routledge), co-authored in 2021 with Karen A. Erickson, Charna D’Ardenne, Nitasha M. Clark, and George W. Noblit. His current research includes the development of reading profiles in students with Williams syndrome (with current graduate students Tonya Moore, Bronwyn Harris, and Sydney Shadrick) and an exploration of respectful portrayals of disability in graphic novels (with colleagues Ashley Pennell and Jason DeHart, and current doctoral students Tonya Moore, Bronwyn Harris, and Sara Pons). He received the Reich College of Education Outstanding Scholarship/Creative Achievement Award in 2020-2021 and the Reich College of Education Outstanding Mentoring Award in 2017.
