Dr. Debra Prykanowski

Debra Prykanowski is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Reading Education and Special Education at Appalachian State University. She earned a Ph.D. in special education with a focus on early childhood from the University of Florida in 2018. She earned a MA from Teachers College, Columbia University in special education with a concentration in behavioral disorders and applied behavior analysis. She earned a BS from Syracuse University in inclusive elementary and special education. Before pursuing her doctorate, she worked in a public-school system in New Jersey for 11 years and held positions as a special education classroom teacher and behavior consultant. Her research interests include working with young children with autism spectrum disorder and their families, conducting functional analysis of problem behavior, and measuring behavior in natural environments. She has presented her own research and research collaborations at national conferences and is published in several professional journals.
